Don’t worry, we’ll get to you mid- and high-enders soon enough, but we’ve got a feeling this week’s Ask Engadget question will appeal to the masses. Granted, we’ve shot this inquiry out before, but a lot has happened in the DSLR realm in 3.5 long years, wouldn’t you agree?

“Summer’s coming up, and that means vacation time. I want to get an entry-level DSLR in order to best capture some of my upcoming adventures, and while I’d like to keep the cost low, I’m not against spending a bit of cash to get a really solid setup. What camera (and maybe even what lens) would your readers suggest for a newcomer?”

Go easy on the guy — he even admitted that he’s fresh to the game — but don’t hold back on explaining your answers in order to really give a good idea of why one camera is a better pick versus another. Right after that, send in a question of your own to ask at engadget dawt com — but make it good, alright?

If you’re a Tivo user and are also a fan of Maureen Ryan, then today’s you’re lucky day. The TV critic, via her paper, the Chicago Tribune, has inked a deal with Tivo to automatically push her suggested shows to Tivos across the country who subscribe to the service.

Personally, this sounds rather weird to these ears. The idea of someone else, even if they’re an expert, recommending what I should watch — and filling my hard drive with the suggestions — is very odd. But then she’s not going to suggest the stuff I watch, as she’s not much of a Skinemax fan.

I’m not optimistic about the new G.I. Joe film. Not at all. There are many things wrong with it; Destro is a skinny guy with no mask, Cobra Commander is a twenty-something, and Duke looks like an Abercrombe model on vacation. As if those reasons aren’t enough, it has Sienna Miller as The Baroness. She’s wrong for the role, but as the motion picture itself has no merits, I guess it makes sense.

Here are a pair of photos of Miller ruining my childhood. I hope you enjoy them. Second one after the jump.

VUDU has just released a new version of their software and it will fix “several issues of importance to users and includes implementation of discounted extended rentals.”

Discounted Extended Rentals: Rentals can now be extended at a discounted price for all movies on the service!

* After an original rental window has lapsed (depending on the title, 24 or 48 hours after initiating viewing or 30 days after ordering, if unwatched), you may extend the rental of that title for a discounted price.
* This option is available for 7 days following the conclusion of the rental of the original title. The original title will remain in My Rentals for that time.
* Once a rental is extended, the motion picture is available under the same terms as the original rental: you may store the motion picture for up to 30 days with 24 or 48 hours to view the movie after you begin to play it.
* You will not receive a discount on a rental that has already been extended once.
* Pricing: $2.00 off new release HD rentals that are $5.99, $1.00 off all other movies, except 50 cents off $0.99 rentals.

Just out of curiosity. For those in the audience who have a VUDU box, do you get the weekly movie listing updates? If you don’t, do you want me to post those for you?

BenQ has never been one to shy away from laying claim to world’s thinnest / smallest titles, and it’s done so yet again with its new T850 camera, despite the fact that it’s seemingly identical in size to the company’s previous T800 model. New this time around, however, is an increasingly-common smile-catching feature, as well as a “swipe” gesture interface, which BenQ claims is one-of-a-kind among touch screen cameras. Otherwise you’ll get the same 8-megapixels, 3x optical zoom, and 3-inch display as before, as well as the usual anti-shake and face-tracking features. No word on a price just yet, but you’ll apparently be able to get this one in your choice of black or red when it launches in the (presumably) not too distant future.

Our ground-breaking series on productivity continues this day with a swift look at making your car as fuel-efficient as possible, or just how to save yourself some money while driving around town. For whatever reason, be it merely supply and demand or the sinister result of speculators speculating wildly, fuel prices are at an all-time high. Right now, oil trades for $130, up more than 100 percent since the same time last year. In other words, in just one year fuel prices have doubled, which, combined with other dismal economic factors here in the U.S., stretches the family budget as thin as it’s ever been in recent years. And since our country simply doesn’t have a well-developed mass transportation system in place, save for some of the bigger cities—have you considered moving?—owning and driving a vehicle is a necessity for most Americans.

So if you’re forced to drive a car, heed the following advice, most of which comes from old men screaming on CNN about how consumers are getting screwed. A tiny bit of money saved here, a little bit there, it adds up swiftly.

First, and most obvious: drive a fuel-efficient car. Why so many people still insist on driving SUVs, then complain about the lousy gas mileage they get, I’ll never know. It’s 2008 and you don’t look cool—you’re not Jay-Z—and you don’t need that much space to take your son to T-ball practice. Get yourself a smart sedan, or maybe even a hybrid if you’re willing to spend a tiny more upfront.

Don’t drive like a teenage maniac, even if your automobiles gets 50 mpg on the highway. Don’t peel away from the intersection when the stoplight turns green, and don’t careen into a red light; the harder you press the gas pedal, the more gas is consumed. Funny, that. On a related note, coast more. Driving down a hill? Get you foot off the gas pedal and let good ol’ momentum propel your car forward. That’s gas saved, and money earned. It’s like Poor Richard’s Almanack.

Talking of driving like a maniac, don’t tailgate. Like CNN notes, not only is it reckless, and a wonderful way to get into an accident, but every time the driver ahead of you breaks, you’ve to break even harder. Then you have to accelerate just to get back to your pre-break speed. So chill out and don’t tailgate.

shelby

Don’t purchase premium gas unless you completely have to. That saves a few ducats right there. Premium gas, unless you’re driving a Shelby or other high-end car—your Honda Accord doesn’t count—is a complete waste of money. Then again, if you’re of the mindset looking to shave a tiny bit off your weekly gas bill, odds are you aren’t driving a car that benefits all that much from premium gas. No disrespect.

Drive the speed limit. I know that’s probably crazy speak for a lot of you (all of my friends, past and present, for example) but not only is it safer, you also burn less gas driving slowly than you do driving fast. This is pure physics. As you drive faster, that’s more air your car has to push out of the way, which leads to more resistance, increased drag and the force pulling your vehicle backward and decreased fuel efficiency. It’s a flowchart of waste, and that’s something you don’t want.

Keep engine idling to a minimum. If you’ve pulled into a store’s parking lot and send your friend inside to get some snacks or whatever, don’t leave the engine running. Edmunds found that turning your automobile off rather than let it idle for more than one minute saves a handsome amount of gas (a 19 percent savings compared to automobiles that didn’t turn their engine off).

Try to minimize excess weight. Hit the gym. Get rid of any junk you’ve got tied to your roof—roof racks do wonders to increase the drag on your automobile, thereby reducing fuel efficiency—and search the interior for unnecessary weight, like, say, a whole collection of bowling balls.

I could recommend that you try to carpool to work, but that seems like one of those non-suggestion recommendations that only serve to upset people. People’s schedules are hectic and having to rely on your neighbor’s wheels is just asking for trouble. What if his kid gets sick and he needs to leave work for the day? Then what? Bother someone else for a ride home? Not likely.

So those are just a few ways to keep your gas bill as low as possible. I’ve heard that some folks now resort to paying with a credit card each time they fill up their tank simply to defer payment to not-as-lean times. Any other tips are, of course, encouraged.

Hey, we’ve seen quite a few gimmicky game control schemes in our day. We thought we were jaded, believed that we could no longer be moved emotionally by a few dorks in a lab, promising to revolutionize video games with their insanity. Until we saw Cam-Trax. You’ll get it in a moment by peeping the video after the break, but the basic gist is this: Cam-Trax offers highly accurate and responsive tracking of random colorful objects you hold in front of your webcam and tell it to track. Gameplay can be EyeToy-esque, but it can also be so much more, since the unit can track many objects in a full three dimensions. The video shows everything from a glorified game of pong to a FPS, and promises to control “any game” with “any webcam.” Show us more, Cam-Trax.

[Thanks, Chen D.]
