Speculation at Slate this day on how you may end up having to pay more for cheap goods, including electronic gizmos, coming from China. No more $30 DVD players, knock-off iPhones and no-name portable media players. We’ll have to stretch our increasingly worthless dollar (well, compared the to Euro) even further, it looks like. Hooray.

There’s a couple reasons as to why we may have to say bye-bye to inexpensive Chinese-made electronics. The price of raw materials is “soaring,” oil is out of control (which raises transportation costs) and there’s a movement to increase Chinese wages. Higher wages wages there means higher prices here.

Slate also points out that there’s not much we have the ability to do about it. We can’t race toward the bottom and look for a cheaper manufacturer than China (none exists) and we can’t tell the Chinese to play “nice” much longer.

In short, we’re screwed. What a time to be alive.

My Xbox 360 overheats badly. So badly in fact that its best if I put it in the window next to my Television to play Halo 3, let it crash out when I’m mid-frag.

I’ve picked up the Intercooler from Amazon and it makes things a tiny superior, but if my radiator kicks on I know I’ve got about 3 minutes until I’m kaput.

I should try something like Michael Hurt’s water-cooled Xbox. It looks great, and seems to do the trick. I love modding, especially when it’s useful.

This day, ExpoImaging announced the Ray Flash: The Ring Flash Adapter, which purportedly replicates the lighting effect given off by more high-priced studio ring flashes. The Ray Flash slides into the hot shoe and because of its circular design creates a 3D shadow that wraps around your subject. In other words, it sort of evens out the burst of light so one section of your pic isn’t washed out.

Some guy who knows stuff about this had this to state,

“The Ray Flash is one very cool piece of gear,” said lighting expert David Hobby in his review of Ray Flash on Strobist.com. “It’s small, lightweight, maintains all of the flash’s TTL functions. Best yet, [the latest Ray Flash design] loses only one stop of light as compared to direct flash. That last bit alone puts it head and shoulders above any [Do It Yourself] versions I have seen or tried. With that kind of output, it is even usable outside during the daylight at modest portrait distances.”

It weights a mere 16-ounces and retails for $299. It currently only works with Canon 580EX (MKI and MKII) and Nikon SB800 flash units. The internal diameter is 4 1/8” so it accommodates most, if not all, Nikon and Canon lenses.
