It takes over “the lowest layers of Apple’s device,” allowing for unsigned, custom firmware to be dropped in. That’s more than allowing custom apps, that’s allowing for a whole different OS to be put on there, or maybe even give it the power to warm up your food. Doubtless it will soon be available for the iPod Touch as well. The PWNED toolset was supposed to be released today but they’re polishing it until next week.

The thin, white form factor wasn’t exactly invented yesterday, but the Wii is the most recent and salient example of it. And it looks like Asus liked the design a lot, because these new leaked pictures look an awful lot like one. I enjoy it, though, the design is even cleaner than Nintendo’s.

Notice there does not appear to be a disc drive; but the pinhole (for emergency ejecting) above the power button indicates that the entire front may in fact be the drive face. That’d be cool. It should be arriving sometime in the next quarter, doubtless with some polished but minimal Linux distribution filling its cute little hard drive.
